SMEL-1

SMEL-1
The Smart Village Lab was launched by Flux50 and Green Energy Park, based on two projects: Interreg NWE RegEnergy and EFRO SMEL-1. Most of the infrastructure was created as part of the SMEL-1 (Smart Multi Energy Lab 1) project.
Objective
The pilot site supports Flemish and European R&D projects, enabling new technologies to be tested immediately in a realistic setting and further refined to improve quality. Companies wishing to test or demonstrate integration with community batteries are encouraged to use this adaptive, high-tech facility. The living lab is also used for training purposes and tours can be arranged for schools and the general public.
Approach
The project includes not only passive elements such as earthworks, EV charging facilities, cable tunnels, street gutters, a control centre and fencing but also active elements such as HVAC, electrical installations, the Smart Home Lab, security (fire, theft, access), communications, measurement and monitoring.
