SmartdHYstrict

SmartdHYstrict
Belgian and Dutch stakeholders are joining forces to explore the potential of hydrogen for local energy systems in a controlled environment.
Objective
The ultimate goal: drastically reduce the load on the electricity grid by using hydrogen in a cost-effective manner. SmartdHYstrict combines various technologies and seeks optimal local consumption and temporary storage of excess energy in the form of hydrogen.
Approach
We are testing various configurations in two complementary pilot sites. At Green Energy Park in Zellik (BE), hydrogen distribution and storage occur via a hydrogen distribution network and corresponding hydrogen tanks, both of which are used bi-directionally (injecting and extracting hydrogen). At the industrial site of VDL in Eindhoven (NL), hydrogen is locally stored as compressed gas and/or in another carrier format within a”grid-lean” test site. Both locations deploy a smart energy management system (EMS) under realistic conditions. In addition to research, SmartdHYstrict aims to inform and engage the broader public by organizing visits and workshops for companies, stakeholders, and local authorities.
